Introduction to Biostatistics Short Course Webpage (May and June 2010)

Past Lectures
  • 4/8/2009: The Biostat-Anesthesiology Collaboration Plan: Academic Development Conference

  • 7/2/2009: Descriptive statistics and Interpretation of Regression Estimates: B.H. Robbins Lecture Series Session

  • 8/6/2009: Sources of Bias in Clinical Research: B.H. Robbins Lecture Series Session

(Suggestions for future lectures)

Procedure for developing a study through the collaboration plan (outdated).

  1. Identification of the topic, initial meetings and discussions with collaborators regarding relevance, goals, and feasibility.
  2. Contact Damon Michaels about the project to get things rolling.
  3. Complete a protocol: This protocol purposely resembles the IRB submission form.
  4. Send the protocol to Damon Michaels and Jonathan Schildcrout who will provide feedback.
  5. Once the protocol has been approved, organize an informal studio-like session (1.5 hours).
    • In attendence: two independent senior investigators, the project's senior investigator (if applicable), two biostatisticians, and Damon Michaels
    • 15-20 minute presentation: Background and relevance, specific aims (well-defined scientific questions), data sources, forseeable challenges, concerns
    • An in depth discussion that refines the proposal and study goals
  6. Follow-up meeting with Biostatistics to discuss feasibility: plan sample size calculations
  7. Biostatistics will conduct power/sample size calculations
  8. Develop data collection tools / case report forms. StarBRITE has examples.
    • Go to <a href="https://www.mc.vanderbilt.edu/starbrite/research/templates.html"> StarBRITE Templates. </a> Then click on the Short Case Report Form Templates link
  9. Meet with Biostatistics and Damon Michaels regarding data collection tools
  10. Obtain IRB and other appropriate approval
