Procedures for Consulting
We have established a consulting service with hourly rates for divisions/departments not wishing to take part in the collaboration plan. Rates for non-profit and industry-sponsored for-profit entities respectively are as follows: $95 and $165 (Staff biostatistician); $180 and $280 (Faculty biostatistician) and $250 and $400 (PhD faculty full professor). For grant proposals we charge a flat $110/hour for all faculty and staff time. This mechanism of support will provide service on an as-personnel-available basis. For Vanderbilt-originated grant applications, we emphasize the
collaboration model and percent effort funding over using consulting services.
When a Vanderbilt researcher has a contract with a pharmaceutical company that allows biostatistical consulting to be charged to the company, the higher rates apply. When the researcher has a fixed budget, the lower rates apply.
Effective February 2009, the Executive Committee voted to distribute the payment for internal consulting assignments 60/40; 60% will be transferred to the employee's discretionary center and 40% will be transferred to the department's general consulting center. The 60% credit to the department member's discretionary center will be charged appropriate percent effort for the consulting assignment. The 40% department support covers use of department resources such as computers, printers, administrative support, etc.
