Teaching R to Non-Statisticians

Frank E. Harrell, Jr., Ph.D

In this highly informal discussion, I will present a new Github project called rscripts (https://github.com/harrelfe/rscripts) containing R markdown templates for a variety of analyses, and demonstrate the interface to this project using the R Hmisc package getRs function. This is intended to help introduce non-statisticians to R, learning by example rather than learning one command at a time. RStudio is used as the R graphical user interface. The hope is to generate some discussion about how best to introduce R to those persons who have never used a programming language, and to instill principles of reproducible analysis.

rscripts organizes template scripts by key phrases, and getRs allows users to search available scripts by these phrases and substrings of them. Then a simple call to getRs will download the needed script and populate the RStudio script editor window.
