How To Interview

This page is for self-training resources to aid us in interviewing well.

Vanderbilt University uses Targeted Selection as its approach for consistency when hiring managers are interviewing and selecting new employees. Targeted Selection training will develop a variety of key behavioral interviewing skills and sharpen existing skills to improve selection decisions. Training is available at http://hr.vanderbilt.edu/training/tstraining.htm.

Avoid Asking Illegal Questions

Federal, state, and local laws restrict the asking of potentially discriminatory questions during a job interview. Even if you don't have a discriminatory bone in your body, you must still avoid these types of questions. The University of Washington Statistics Department has a nice webpage on illegal interview questions. A rule of thumb to distinguish between legal and illegal questions is to ask yourself, "What exactly is the information I need to decide whether this candidate can perform their job?"
