Statistical Computing and Graphics

  • Computer programming prerequisites
  • Syllabus?, course notes, and book by Alzola and Harrell.
  • Honor code information?
  • Concepts to master
  • Manuals from Insightful Corp.
  • Free books for learning the R language, which is similar to S-Plus
  • R/S-Plus function finder
  • A compendium of S programming examples compiled by Paul Johnson
  • Scripts and Output? used in Class and Labs
  • Class discussion board?
  • Anonymous feedback to instructor?
  • Homework and Project Assignments?
  • Students' good and bad graphics examples?
  • rsubmit macro? for submitting code from the NoteTab editor to R under Windows, and instructions? for installing and using the macro in =NoteTab=
  • Corrected version of exenvirn.sd2? SAS dataset for importing, for Assignment 3.
  • Lab Assignments?
  • DOS batch file? for running S-Plus 6 in batch mode, for creating output .txt files in which the placement of comments is preserved. The file assumes S-Plus is located at c:\Program Files\splus61 and that your project area is in c:\temp (you should edit this to point to your real project area).
  • Small Excel file for learning how to import data here?.
  • S-Plus script? for creating data for Table 5 of Galobardes et al. for final project
  • Corrected data and data dictionaries from Rosner? and some associated S-Plus data frames (dumpdata.ssd file). Save to a temporary file, invoke S-Plus from your project area, and issue a command such as data.restore('full dumpdata file name'), i.e., data.restore('directory/dumpdata.sdd'). If you saved the file under the sdd suffix you can use the File .. Import .. From File .. Files of Type S-Plus Transport Files menus.
  • Datasets useful in learning biostatistical modeling techniques (UVa) * For an S-Plus script demonstrating how to draw random numbers, the central limit theorem, and binomial probabilities, click here?.
  • Tricks for using the S-Plus 4.5 Graphical User Interface to Produce Graphics?. Pam Goodman, MathSoft? DAPD, 9 October 1998; 19 pages, color, PDF
  • Information about slide rules from HP, Davie and Kessler, and Peter Fox (includes some good material about logarithms).

For four examples of circular slide rules from William Thornton click here: 1 2 3 4

  • Examples of color image plots for 3 variables
    1. Relationship between diastolic and systolic blood pressure and the risk of disabling stroke from thrombolytic therapy for myocardial infarction?
    2. Relationship between coma score and daily urine output on median survival time for ICU patients with sepsis?
    3. Examples of "live" Java graphlets produced by S-Plus 6.0 on Linux/UNIX:
    4. Fuel analysis?
    5. Futures analysis?
    6. Example with multiple graph pages and actions based on clicking selected graph regions?
    7. An interactive map?
